Flexible Fuel Vehicles (FFVs)
Flexible fuel vehicles are not a new concept in green engineering, but recent developments have made them more affordable and accessible. FFVs use a single fuel tank that can run on a blend of gasoline with ethanol or methanol. While not a permanent solution to vehicle emissions, they significantly reduce carbon output per car.
Surprisingly, this idea dates back over a century. In the early 1900s, the Ford Model T was designed to accommodate various fuel types. Since then, companies like Volkswagen in the 1990s, and innovations like Ford’s EcoBoost engine, have revived the concept. Today, FFVs offer a viable and economical alternative to traditional internal combustion engines.
According to the U.S. Open Fuel Standard Act, the goal was that by 2017, most new vehicles would be FFVs capable of running on ethanol, methanol, electricity, or hydrogen — paving the way toward a more sustainable transportation future.
