Ballard Unveils Next-Generation Methanol-Fueled Backup Power System for Telecom Sector
Ballard Power Systems has announced the launch of its next-generation ElectraGen™-ME backup power system, designed specifically for the telecommunications market. Powered by methanol, the new system introduces significant enhancements in reliability, durability, and serviceability—all critical factors for the growing number of telecom operators deploying these solutions globally.
“Our Telecom Backup Power shipments have grown rapidly since we added methanol systems to our portfolio,” said Tony Cochrane, Director of Product Management – Telecom Backup Power at Ballard. “This new generation strengthens our customer value proposition by offering a more reliable and cost-effective solution.”
The success of Ballard’s ElectraGen™-ME systems is driven by two primary needs:
  1. Regular or daily power outages in regions with unstable electricity grids (e.g., South Africa, Indonesia).
  2. Extended outages in otherwise stable markets during crisis events like extreme weather or natural disasters (e.g., Caribbean hurricanes, Japanese tsunamis).
Key Enhancements in the New Generation
Reliability:
  • Over 25% increase in system Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF)
  • Threefold improvement in cycle life, thanks to upgraded fuel processor modules
Durability:
  • Expanded use of corrosion-resistant coatings
  • Enhanced fuel level sensor and improved fluid flow design
Serviceability:
  • Improved firmware adds new functionality
  • Better component access and clear labeling for easier maintenance
Why Methanol?
ElectraGen™-ME systems are ideal for extended runtime backup applications and deliver both economic and environmental advantages over traditional batteries and diesel generators. The system’s integrated fuel reformer converts HydroPlus™—a methanol-water blend—into hydrogen, which powers the fuel cell. With methanol widely available worldwide, the system offers a practical and scalable solution for telecom operators.

The introduction of this next-generation system reinforces Ballard’s leadership in fuel cell innovation, backed by a strong track record in advanced technology and a growing base of commercial partners worldwide.
